New hypertension thresholds: do these criteria really apply to you?

However, behind these official figures,  the situation is more complex than it appears . Is this target  truly achievable – and above all, beneficial – for each of us  ?

A new classification: understanding the changes

The concept of  “prehypertension” is no longer used . The new system now distinguishes between:
–  “High” blood pressure (between 120 and 129 mmHg systolic, with a diastolic below 80)
– Stage 1 hypertension (130-139/80-89 mmHg)
– Stage 2 hypertension (above 140/90 mmHg)
Extreme cases ( above 180/120 mmHg ) are now classified as  hypertensive crises .

This overhaul has a specific objective:  to promote earlier intervention . But is this uniform approach  truly suitable for every individual  ?
