16 WARNING SIGNS OF LIVER CANCER

8. Fatigue That Persists Despite Rest

Overwhelming exhaustion that doesn’t improve with sleep is a hallmark cancer symptom. The growing tumor demands energy resources, and the body mounts an immune response to the malignancy, both consuming vast energy reserves.

This fatigue is severe enough to interfere with daily function and normal activities. It represents a distinct change from baseline and often worsens progressively. If you experience bone-deep, unrelenting fatigue, especially when combined with other symptoms, cancer evaluation is warranted. Blood tests measuring hemoglobin, albumin, and inflammatory markers can help assess severity.

7. Palpable Mass or Lump in the Upper Right Abdomen

A noticeable bulge or lump felt in the upper right abdomen, particularly one that grows over time, can represent a tumor. An enlarged liver (hepatomegaly) from cancer may be felt as a firm, irregular mass below the rib cage.

This mass may be tender or cause discomfort when pressed. Distinguishing between benign liver enlargement and malignant nodules requires imaging studies like ultrasound, CT, or MRI. Any new abdominal mass warrants immediate imaging evaluation to determine its nature.

6. Ascites (Fluid Accumulation in the Abdomen)

While ascites can result from advanced cirrhosis alone, new or rapidly progressive ascites can indicate malignancy. A tumor impairs the liver’s ability to regulate fluid balance while also producing inflammatory substances that promote fluid retention.

The abdomen becomes visibly swollen, hard, and shiny. Ascites represents advanced disease and indicates cancer has significantly compromised liver function. Fluid analysis through paracentesis can sometimes reveal malignant cells. Any new ascites requires urgent evaluation.

5. Hepatic Encephalopathy (Confusion, Memory Problems)
